BOSTON, MA — Surveillance video from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation captured the moments before a deadly wrong-way crash in Boston. Police said an 81-year-old driver, Antone Carvalho of Somerset, took a wrong turn before traveling onto Interstate 93.
Authorities said the sequence led to a head-on collision and a separate crash involving other vehicles as drivers tried to avoid Carvalho’s car.
How did the crash unfold on Interstate 93?
Investigators said Carvalho entered the highway in the wrong direction after the mistaken turn. From there, police said, he continued until the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with another car.
The wrong-way driving also caused two other vehicles to collide while their drivers swerved, adding to the number of people injured at the scene.
Who was killed and who was hurt?
Police identified the driver who died as a man in his 20s from Haverhill. His name was not released in the information provided by authorities.
Officers said four other people were hospitalized with injuries they described as non-life-threatening.
What happened to the driver police identified?
Carvalho was taken to a hospital after the crash, according to police. Officials said he will be issued a court summons at a later date.
Authorities did not immediately release additional details about any charges or a court appearance timeline.
What does the surveillance video add to the investigation?
The transportation department footage provides a clear view of the wrong-way entry that set off the collision sequence. That evidence may help investigators reconstruct how the crash developed on one of the region’s busiest highways.
Police have not said whether speed, impairment, or other factors played a role.
