Police vehicles and road closures on Route 6 in Dartmouth after a fatal crash involving a bicycle and dump truck

DARTMOUTH, MA — A woman riding a bicycle died Monday after a collision with a dump truck on Route 6 in Dartmouth, according to officials. The crash happened at about 11:54 a.m. near the intersection with Reed Road and shut down westbound traffic while investigators worked the scene.

Authorities said the dump truck had pulled over when first responders arrived. The woman, identified only as being 74 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

What did investigators say about the crash scene?

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said the driver was cooperating with the investigation. State and local police were still examining how the collision occurred, and officials had not released a reconstruction of the sequence of events.

Police initially described the person involved as a pedestrian before clarifying that the victim was riding a bicycle.

Which roads were closed after the collision?

Dartmouth police said Route 6 west was closed between Reed Road and Quarry Street during the investigation. Reed Road was also shut down from Route 6 to Woodcart Drive.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes while crews remained on scene.

Has police said whether the driver will be charged?

Investigators have not said whether the dump truck driver will be cited or face criminal charges. Officials said the review was still active, and no determination had been announced about fault or enforcement.

The driver remained part of the inquiry as authorities gathered information from the roadway and from witnesses.

How close was this crash to another fatal wreck?

The scene was about a mile from another deadly crash on Route 6 late Friday, when two people were killed. Officials did not say whether the two incidents were connected.

For now, the Monday collision left a major stretch of Route 6 closed and added another fatal crash to a roadway already under scrutiny by local authorities.
