UNIONTOWN, PA — Pennsylvania State Police arrested a Fayette County man on Saturday after an undercover operation tied to allegations that he sexually abused a 13-year-old girl, according to Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele.
Investigators say the case began with a report on April 27 and expanded through evidence from social media, messages, letters and videos.
How did investigators build the case?
State police in Uniontown were told that the child had been the victim of repeated sexual crimes by a man she knew as “Uncle Sam.” Troopers later identified that person as Samuel Clinton Newman, 53, who is described as the child’s cousin.
Authorities said the report was supported by materials pulled from Facebook, text messages, letters and videos that showed child sexual abuse.
What happened during the monitored meeting?
With the family’s cooperation, police monitored a video conversation on Friday in which Newman arranged to pick up the child at her home and take her to a local park.
Aubele said the girl helped make the case by facing her abuser during the setup. He called her “certainly a brave little girl” and said the meeting allowed investigators to move forward.
What did police find when Newman arrived?
When Newman showed up Saturday morning, the child was not there. Two members of the state police crime unit confronted him and arrested him without incident, officials said.
Police said he was carrying a bookbag that contained two blankets and a sex device.
What charges and next steps are in the case?
Newman faces several charges, including sexual abuse of children, statutory sexual assault and unlawful contact with a minor. Authorities said the investigation is still open.
Officials are also looking for any other possible victims. Aubele urged parents to talk with their children, know who they are with and monitor social media and adult communications.
