JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City police announced three arrests this week in separate shooting and homicide investigations, including cases connected to the Rutgers Avenue and Pavonia Avenue corridors. One arrest involved a suspect wanted in a Syracuse homicide investigation, while the other two were tied to May shootings in Jersey City.
How did officers make the first arrest?
Authorities said officers took 27-year-old Shaquan Hyppolite of Syracuse, New York, into custody Thursday after receiving a bulletin related to a homicide investigation in Syracuse. Police said they found Hyppolite’s vehicle near 127 Cator Ave. before arresting him.
Deputy Chief Mark Conroy said the case underscored the need for coordination across city lines when violent-crime investigations move quickly and require agencies to share information.
What was the case near Rutgers and Chapel avenues?
Later Thursday, police arrested 22-year-old Shahid Jamison of Jersey City in connection with a May 6 shooting near Rutgers and Chapel avenues. Investigators said two 23-year-old people were shot but survived with nonfatal gunshot wounds.
Jamison faces charges that include attempted murder, conspiracy, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, according to police.
What happened in the Pavonia Avenue shooting?
In a separate case, officers arrested 21-year-old Jamien Sojos of Bayonne in connection with a May 7 shooting on Pavonia Avenue. Police said no injuries were reported in that incident.
Sojos was charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses, among other counts, as investigators continued to work through the case.

Mayor James Solomon said the arrests reflect the value of intelligence-driven policing and officers working to stop further violence before it happens. Police said the three cases show how quickly detectives can move when agencies share information and follow leads tied to shootings and other violent crimes.
