Police investigate a fatal head-on crash scene on a Connecticut road at night

CHAPLIN, CT — Two men were killed and two other people were seriously injured after a two-vehicle head-on crash late Friday in Chaplin, according to Connecticut State Police.

Troopers said the collision happened around 11:53 p.m. near 17 Willimantic Road, in the area of Route 6 and Route 198. The road stayed closed until about 9 a.m. Saturday.

Who was involved in the collision?

State police said the driver of a Dodge Journey, a 44-year-old Chaplin woman, was found outside her vehicle and taken to Windham Hospital with suspected minor injuries.

The other vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, carried four occupants who were all found unresponsive at the scene.

Which victims did state police identify?

The front and rear passenger-side occupants of the Hyundai were pronounced dead at the scene. State police identified them as 20-year-old Jaiden Pacheco of Windham and 18-year-old Geovani Aponte Jr. of Willimantic.

The 19-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger on the driver’s side were extracted from the vehicle and taken by EMS to Hartford Hospital with suspected serious injuries.

What did Chaplin officials say after the crash?

In a social media post, town officials said Chaplin was deeply saddened by the fatal collision and extended condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.

Officials also thanked first responders and state police for their quick response and investigation, while urging drivers to prioritize safety on local roads.

What happens next in the investigation?

Connecticut State Police said the crash remains under investigation. Troop D in Danielson is asking witnesses to come forward with any information.

Investigators have not said what led to the head-on collision or whether any citations have been issued.
