PHILADELPHIA, PA — Severe thunderstorms that rolled through the Philadelphia region Saturday afternoon began weakening by early evening after the National Weather Service warned of possible tornadoes. The immediate tornado concern has passed, but forecasters say the area still faces a flood risk as the weather pattern changes again next week.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the low 70s as the storms taper off, setting up a much more comfortable Sunday with lower humidity and plenty of sun.
What will Sunday and Monday be like for the region?
Forecasters expect both days to be among the best of the week, with dry weather, low humidity and seasonable temperatures. Sunday should be mostly sunny and pleasant enough for outdoor plans, and Monday is also expected to stay mostly sunny before the next round of unsettled weather arrives.
Smoke may drift back into the area, but the forecast says it should not resemble the thick Code Purple conditions seen earlier in the week.
When does the next round of storms return?
The next major change is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, when showers and thunderstorms could redevelop and some severe weather cannot be ruled out. Humidity is forecast to climb sharply by Tuesday, bringing oppressively muggy conditions back to the region.
Rainfall over the two-day period could add up to inches, which may affect summer travel, outdoor events and other plans.
How has air quality changed after days of smoke?
Philadelphia has spent the past three days under the influence of wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota, which led to multiple air quality alerts and unhealthy conditions for many residents. By Saturday night, conditions had improved from unhealthy to moderate.
That improvement offers a break for people who want to be outside, though forecasters still expect some lingering smoke at times.
What does the seven-day forecast show?
The forecast calls for a mostly sunny stretch early in the week, then another round of NEXT Weather Alert days Tuesday and Wednesday before conditions calm down again later in the week. Highs are expected to stay mostly in the low to mid-80s.
