NEW YORK, NY — New York City and the surrounding Tri-state area are facing another day of unsettled weather, with forecasters warning that the most disruptive conditions could arrive during the afternoon and evening commute. Early showers were already moving east from Pennsylvania into parts of northern New Jersey, while a brief quieter stretch was expected late in the morning.
The main concern is a second round of storms that could bring heavy rain, flooding and severe thunderstorm impacts across the region Tuesday.
When is the worst weather expected in the NYC area?
Storm development is expected to increase around 10 to 11 a.m., starting southwest of the region and spreading northeast across the metro area. The strongest impacts are expected later in the day, especially during the afternoon and evening commute.
Wednesday is expected to be less active, with severe weather risks dropping to a marginal level across the board.
What hazards are forecasters warning about?
The National Weather Service says the setup could produce damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, large hail up to 1 inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes. The tornado risk is focused most sharply on Northeast New Jersey, the NYC metro, Nassau County and the Lower Hudson Valley.
Heavy downpours are also expected to create localized flooding, especially where rain falls repeatedly over the same areas.
Which alerts are in effect for the region?
A flood watch remains in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday for Northeast New Jersey, the New York City metro area and nearby low-lying communities. Rainfall is expected to average 1 to 2 inches, with isolated totals of 3 to 4 inches possible at rates as high as 2.5 inches per hour.
Forecasters said the highest severe weather threat levels, between Level 2 and Level 3, cover Northeast New Jersey and the immediate metro area.
What else should coastal communities watch for?
Beyond the storm and flooding risk inland, ocean beaches are also facing dangerous rip currents through Wednesday. That adds another hazard for coastal communities as the same weather system moves through the area.
