PLYMOUTH, MA — A police response to a reported domestic violence incident in Plymouth turned deadly Friday morning when an SUV fleeing officers crashed head-on into another vehicle on Route 3A.
Authorities said the SUV driver later died at a hospital, while the other motorist suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
What happened on Route 3A?
Prosecutors said the sequence began around 9:37 a.m., when domestic violence was reported in Plymouth. When officers arrived, the male suspect had already left in a blue Volvo.
The vehicle was seen on Route 3 at about 9:40 a.m., and police briefly tried to stop it. Officers ended the pursuit because the driver was moving too erratically, prosecutors said.
Who was hurt in the crash?
The Volvo collided head-on with a Porsche Macan near Warren Street, according to authorities. The driver of the Porsche was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
The driver of the Volvo was also taken to a Plymouth hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prosecutors did not identify him publicly as of Friday afternoon.
How did the crash affect traffic?
The collision shut down Route 3A, also known as State Road, along with nearby streets for hours. Part of Plimoth Patuxet Highway was also closed while investigators and emergency crews worked at the scene.
Officials said the roads reopened by about 2 p.m. after the response wrapped up.
What do investigators know now?
State and local police were continuing to investigate the crash and the domestic violence report that preceded it. Prosecutors said few details about the original incident were being released.
Authorities said the case began with a domestic violence call, then escalated into a brief police chase and the fatal wreck minutes later.
