A hot New York City street with bright sun and people walking in summer heat

NEW YORK, NY — Extreme heat alerts are back across the New York City region beginning Tuesday, marking the start of another hot stretch that will be uncomfortable even if it falls short of the previous heat wave. A heat advisory takes effect in the city shortly before noon, and many neighborhoods are expected to feel more than 100 degrees by Wednesday.

Forecasters say the pattern will remain dangerous enough to require caution, especially for people spending long periods outdoors or without reliable cooling.

Where Will the Worst Heat Be Felt?

The most intense conditions are expected in Central and South Jersey, where heat index values could climb above 105 degrees and extreme heat warnings are in place. New York City will also be under a heat advisory, with oppressive humidity adding to the impact of high temperatures.

The broader region is facing a stretch that may be less severe than the last major heat wave, but still strong enough to create health risks.

What Should Beachgoers Watch For?

Officials are also warning about rip currents along beaches in New York City and Long Island. That means swimmers and anyone entering the water should pay close attention to posted guidance and local conditions before heading out.

The warning comes as summer beach traffic remains high and dangerous surf can catch people off guard even when skies are otherwise calm.

How Long Will The Heat Last?

Thursday is expected to stay hot, with temperatures again reaching the low to mid 90s. That would make the stretch three straight days at or above 90 degrees, meeting the definition of a heat wave and making it the second such event of the summer.

Even though the hottest conditions should ease later in the week, the region will not immediately return to quiet weather.

What Changes Are Coming By The Weekend?

Relief is expected late in the week as highs fall into the low 80s on Saturday and Sunday. But the cooler air comes with a tradeoff: an increasing chance of afternoon and evening showers and storms.

Forecasters say the area could see storms on and off Saturday, with more possible Sunday during the World Cup final. The shift should bring more comfortable temperatures, but less predictable conditions outdoors.
