Police investigate a fatal head-on crash on Lakes Road in Monroe, New York

MONROE, NY — A head-on crash on Lakes Road in the town of Monroe left one driver dead and another critically injured Saturday evening, according to New York State Police. The collision prompted an active investigation by troopers from the Monroe barracks.

Police said the crash happened at about 7:14 p.m. on May 23, 2026.

What happened on Lakes Road?

Investigators said a 2019 Toyota traveling southwest crossed the center line into the northeast lane and hit a 2025 Subaru head-on as the Subaru was traveling northeast. The crash occurred on Lakes Road in Monroe.

The preliminary finding points to the Toyota entering the opposite lane before impact, though state police have not said what caused the vehicle to cross over.

Who was involved in the crash?

The driver of the Subaru was identified as 43-year-old Daryl Baker of Monroe. Police said Baker was found dead inside the vehicle at the scene.

The Toyota’s driver was identified as 61-year-old Robert Molina of Monroe.

What was the condition of the other driver?

State police said Molina received lifesaving measures at the scene before being taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown. He was listed in critical condition.

Officials did not release additional details about his injuries.

What happens next in the investigation?

New York State Police said the case remains under investigation. No further information was immediately released about charges, contributing factors, or whether other agencies were assisting.
