NEW YORK, NY — Rounds of severe weather swept across the Tri-State area on Tuesday, bringing downpours, flash flooding, damaging winds and possible tornadoes just days after another storm system hit the region over the weekend. Tornado warnings and watches were issued by the National Weather Service before later expiring as the storms moved offshore.
Where did the worst damage appear in New Jersey?
Parts of New Jersey took some of the hardest hits. In Stanhope, a possible tornado was spotted, and social media video also showed a funnel cloud on the ground at a golf center in Parsippany, about a mile north of the Troy Hills area.
The National Weather Service said it planned to survey both locations on Wednesday to determine whether tornadoes touched down.
What flooding and weather alerts remained in New York?
Even after the most dangerous storms passed, flood and thunderstorm concerns continued in New York. A flash flood warning was in effect for Ulster County until 1 a.m. Wednesday, and a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Orange County until 10 p.m.
Forecasters also said New York City and much of the Tri-State area faced a marginal risk, rated 1 out of 5, for severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon, with damaging winds the main concern.
What happened on 95th Street at 41st Avenue?
A fast-moving storm tore through the area around 95th Street at 41st Avenue, toppling trees and crushing parked vehicles as residents ran for safety. Dashcam video captured one tree falling between two moving vehicles, missing a driver by seconds.
Witnesses described a sudden and violent burst of weather. One said the impact sounded like a large boom, and nearby residents said the rain and darkness arrived quickly.
Who was affected and what comes next?
Several residents were left dealing with serious vehicle damage and uncertainty about insurance coverage. Leonor Estevez said her Honda Civic was destroyed only days after knee replacement surgery, while Esteban Comina said a Honda Pilot belonging to his family was crushed and that no one was hurt.
Comina said the family was still worried about whether insurance would pay for the losses. No injuries or deaths were reported, and the National Weather Service said further updates would follow after its Wednesday surveys.
