NEW YORK, NY — Flood warnings issued Thursday for New York City and New Jersey have been canceled, but forecasters say another round of storms is expected Friday. Officials are warning that scattered flash flooding and isolated severe thunderstorms could affect the region again.
A Flood Watch remains in effect through 11:59 p.m. Thursday for Ocean County, New Jersey, as communities continue to recover from storms that already brought heavy rain and damage.
What rainfall totals were reported on Thursday?
Some of the heaviest rain fell in New Jersey, where there were also reports of storm damage. Reported totals included 4.91 inches in Kendall Park, 4.35 inches in Keansburg, 4.12 inches in Dayton and 3.44 inches in Skillman.
At JFK Airport, the reported total was much lower at 0.11 inches.
What damage has already been linked to the storms?
The severe weather threat has left people in both states on edge because it followed storms earlier in the week that inundated neighborhoods. In Ocean Township, New Jersey, those storms also caused the roof of a BJ’s Wholesale Club to collapse.
Thursday night storms are expected to taper off, but humidity and warm temperatures will remain in place.
What is the forecast for Friday?
Friday is shaping up to be hot, humid and unsettled. The forecast high is 88 degrees, but it is expected to feel more like 93 to 95 degrees.
Forecasters say there is a 70% chance of storms developing after 4 p.m., with localized flash flooding possible under similar conditions to Thursday.
What comes after the storm threat?
The weekend forecast offers some relief, with sun and clouds expected Saturday and mostly sunny skies on Sunday. Highs are projected to be in the low 80s both days.
Looking farther ahead, the region could face its second heat wave of the summer in the middle of next week, when temperatures above 90 degrees are possible.
