ROCHESTER, NY — Two people were killed and another driver was left in critical condition after an overnight three-vehicle crash on Rochester’s Inner Loop near Joseph Avenue, according to New York State Police. Investigators said the crash happened around 1:25 a.m. Friday.
Police said the sequence began when an SUV traveled into oncoming traffic and struck a Ford head-on. The impact then pushed the Ford into the path of a Jeep, setting off a second collision.
What Do Investigators Say Happened on the Inner Loop?
State police said the SUV was moving the wrong way when it hit the Ford. The collision happened on the Inner Loop, one of Rochester’s key expressway routes, near Joseph Avenue.
Authorities have not said what caused the SUV to enter opposing traffic. The crash remained under investigation Friday.
Who Were the People Hurt in the Crash?
The driver of the Ford and his passenger, both 21-year-old men, died at the scene, police said. Their names have not been released.
The SUV was driven by a 39-year-old woman who was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and remained in critical condition. The Jeep driver was also hospitalized, but police said those injuries were not considered life-threatening.
What Have Police Released So Far?
New York State Police have not identified any of the victims. They have also not released additional details about the vehicles involved beyond the Ford, the SUV and the Jeep.
Officials said the investigation is continuing as they work to determine the circumstances that led to the wrong-way entry and the chain reaction crash.
What Happens Next in the Investigation?
For now, the case remains open and no further updates were immediately available. Police have not announced whether charges were being considered.
Investigators are expected to review the crash scene, witness accounts and vehicle positions as they piece together how the collision unfolded early Friday.
