NEW YORK, NY — Police say an 18-year-old man has been arrested after a mother riding a northbound subway train with four children reported that he sexually assaulted her in a crowded car near Manhattan’s W. 28th St. station.
The suspect, identified as Ari Shtein, surrendered with his lawyer and was charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual abuse and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
What happened on the train near W. 28th Street?
Authorities say the alleged assault happened around 3 p.m. on June 28 as the train approached the station. The victim, 30, told police the man was standing behind her on the northbound R line when he allegedly inserted two fingers inside her vagina without her consent.
According to the complaint, the children with her were between 7 and 11 years old. Police said none of them was physically injured.
Who was identified as the suspect?
Police identified the defendant as Ari Shtein. Investigators said he has a Washington, D.C. address, though they had not determined whether he lives there or in New York City.
Officials also said he has no prior arrest record in the city. He is being represented by attorney Priya Chaudhry, who could not be reached for comment.
How did the victim respond after the incident?
The woman got off the train at W. 28th St. and reported the incident to police. She was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to authorities.
Cops later released a photograph of the suspect that had been taken on the train as part of the investigation.
What happens next in court?
Prosecutors asked for bail to be set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond, but Shtein was released on his own recognizance.
His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 26, as the case moves forward in Manhattan.
