Kieran Mcbride and Jack Toal: Bronco Cross Country State Champions
November 29, 2022
After a strong fall sports season this year, Bronxville’s cross country, tennis, and swimming and diving teams advanced to the state championships, naming over 10 athletes as state qualifiers. The boys cross country team recently took the section and state title. Their season lasted from late August to November 12th, when they competed at the NYSPHSAA New York State Championships in Verona, NY.
Looking into the season itself, team member Jack Toal shared his thoughts on preseason this year, noting “It was definitely a step up from our individual practices.” His teammate Kieran McBride thought that there was more of a team bonding aspect during the two week period. Throughout the season, the boys team ran a mixture of 4 and 5K’s at their meets. In their postseason, Bronco runners found themselves constantly competing against Briarcliff, losing to them at County Championships, but later taking the Section 1 title at Sectional Championships. Jack stated, “We had a 50/50 chance of winning. We just wanted to finish strong. Once we won we were obviously happy, but knew we had states to focus on.” The team departed for states on Friday, November 11, arriving in Verona that night in order to get a feel for the course. “We warmed up by walking and jogging most of the course, then finishing off with some sprints,” said Jack. The next morning, Broncos competed in the 5K. Conditions on the Verona course were much rougher than previous courses the team has run on, with bigger puddles and colder temperatures, but they still succeeded and took home the title of state champions. This is the first boy’s state championship title in the school’s history, reflecting the hardwork and effort the boys put into their season this year.
With top five senior scorers graduating this year, the team hopes to succeed moving forward with the help of many rising sophomores and juniors.
