Greta Gerwig’s new adaption of the beloved novel, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott will come to theatres this Christmas!  The movie has an all-star cast which includes Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet.  This film will definitely interest a wide audience.  Greta Gerwig received a golden globe and many Oscar nominations for her 2017 film, Lady Bird which has become one of my favorite movies.  It will be interesting to see Gerwig’s reinterpretation of this classic novel.  The film follows the March sisters: Meg, Amy, Beth, and Jo living in Massachusetts after the Civil War.  As they grow older, each sister develops her own distinct personality as they come to discover their own place in the world.  In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gerwig mentioned that she based this film on her own life: “This feels like autobiography,” Gerwig says. “When you live through a book, it almost becomes the landscape of your inner life… It becomes part of you, in a profound way.” Many aspects of the movie will contribute to the novel’s revival.  The lead costume designer, Jaqueline Durran is also known for her beautiful work in Pride and Prejudice as well as Anna Karenina.  The film highlights modern-day themes such as feminism, sisterhood, and friendship. While women were confined to domestic roles during this time period, the trailer alludes to the fact that at least one of the March sisters will challenge the gender roles of society.  I am excited to see this new revival of one of my favorite books!
