Sweeney Todd is Bloody Good!
April 20, 2023
Created in 1980 by famed producer Stephen Sondheim, Sweeney Todd makes a triumphant return to Broadway as one of the world’s best opera musicals, having originally won 8 Tony Awards. The classic tale follows the maddening life of Sweeney Todd who returns to his barber shop after being wrongfully sentenced to prison by a corrupt judge. Todd vows revenge and does so in a bloody, twisted way, making it potentially scary for younger audiences.
In the latest revival, Sweeney Todd is directed by Hamilton’s Thomas Kail, and headlined by music, Broadway and film star Josh Groban, along with Annaleigh Ashford and Stranger Things’ star Gaten Matarazzo.
While this Sweeney Todd features numerous murders, Josh Groban’s portrayal has been called less violent and scary than his predecessors. It is still a bloody good show and exemplifies that revenge is never a good option. The acting was captivating, the music was amazing, the set brings you back in time, which all combine for a star packed, thriller.
Sweeney Todd is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most enduring productions for good reason.
